The intimidating magic of excel spreadsheets…
Everyone does it. Everyone spends time at work not working. Whether you are surfing the internet, writing emails, playing solitaire, reading blogs, talking on the phone, sleeping with your eyes open or staring off into space… I guarantee there have been moments of work unproductiveness in your life.
Last week I received an email from a reader who said:
“I am enjoying what I am reading on your blog even though I should be doing some work...”
I was curious… how was this reader able to get away with reading blogs at work? I can only get away with that when my boss is out of the office and even then I have to hide it from my co-workers. So I asked for this reader’s secret, which once revealed, confirmed my theory of the intimidating magic of excel spreadsheets…
“I just keep some programs running and excel sheets up for computer dressing.”And then I had to come clean…
“Oh... you do what I do when I'm not working, but supposed to be... I always have excel spreadsheets up on my computer too. For some reason excel spreadsheets look like you're working hard and people fall for it. :) Look at me, I'm advocating slacking off... but you know there is more to life than this mind-numbing mundane job I do for a paycheck.”A statement I totally believe. Even though I work hard and am good at my job and deserve the salary I earn… there is more to life than being some dictator boss’s peon slave and cooped up in a cubicle for eight hours a day. There is art, music, passion, love, and adventure just to name a few. All things I want to experience, read about, write about and live.
So... if you need a mental escape to worlds unknown while at work; throw an excel spreadsheet up on your computer screen and let its intimidating magic clear the way for your escape through the internet where the world and blogs galore await…
