The 2008 Academy Awards Hollywood Style

There is one word in my mind that describes last night’s Academy Awards show, glamorous. After months of the writer’s strike and the Golden Globes ceremony being cancelled, Hollywood dressed up for the Oscars and looked fabulous. The actors and actresses were absolutely stunning on the red carpet! It was like they finally had a reason to dress up and be celebrities and they didn’t want to disappoint their fans. Those critiquing the red carpet outfits claimed actors and actresses were being safe in their fashion choices. I don’t think the actors and actresses were playing it safe, I think they opted for classic Hollywood glamour and style. In my opinion Helen Mirren and Marion Cotillard outshone the rest. Take a look at the best dressed of last night’s Academy Awards.

After watching an hour-long red carpet show just to get a glimpse of Johnny Depp I was disappointed due to his late arrival and immediate seating. I had to settle for glimpses of him in the audience! And to my dismay, Johnny Depp did not win the best actor award for his performance in Sweeney Todd. Although he was great as the murdering singing barber of Fleet Street, I doubted he would beat out Daniel Day Lewis’ performance for There Will be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis deserved the best actor award!

My favorite moments of the Academy Awards show were first Daniel Day Lewis’ quiet, dignified and almost shy acceptance speech for his bigger than life and outstanding performance in There Will be Blood. His performance was so opposite of his everyday personality displayed in his speech that I was blown away by how great an actor he is. I also loved how he bowed to queen Helen Mirren and she knighted him. My second favorite moment was Marion Cotillard’s utter surprise and humility at winning the best actress award for her performance in La Vie en Rose. She was so beautiful, genuine, grateful, and thrilled and I loved how she thanked love, life, and beauty in her speech and then walked off stage wiping tears from her face as Forrest Whitaker comforted her. And my third favorite moment was how Javier Bardem spoke to his mother in Spanish during his acceptance speech for best supporting actor for his performance in No Country for Old Men and then he thanked the Coen brothers for giving him the worst hair style of all time in the movie.
