A Nifty Fifty New Year’s
My best girlfriend ‘D’ is a New Year’s Eve baby. Consequently I rarely get to spend her birthday with her. She is usually with her family and I have some kind of New Year’s Eve thing to attend. But this year was different ‘D’ turned 50! And so a Nifty Fifty New Year’s Eve surprise birthday party was just the thing to mark the special occasion.
The amount of lies her two daughters, mother and myself told ‘D’ over the last month while planning this surprise party could fill a canyon, but it was totally worth it for she was completely surprised! When ‘D’ arrived at her daughter’s house to pick her up for dinner because her car wouldn’t start, (LIE!), we drowned her in silly string, confetti and poppers and yelled SURPRISE! I think we might have given her a mild heart attack or stroke. We probably should have considered her age and whispered surprise.
There is something I love about ‘D’ she’s genuine. There isn’t a guile bone in her body. And she raised her two beautiful daughters to be just like her. And the fact that they consider me part of their family just makes my insides all warm and fuzzy.
The evening was a combination of tons of food, typical birthday and New Year’s Eve festivities, and the sugary sweetest birthday cake I’ve had in a long time. Don’t tell anyone, but I had two pieces.
But the best part of the whole evening, other than giving ‘D’ a heart attack, was a tribute video that her daughters and family made for her. It was hilarious with bloopers, so endearing with all the wonderful things they had to say about her, and ended with everyone including her mother dancing to ‘D’s favorite Britney Spears song.
It was a beautiful tribute to ring in a new year and a new decade of ‘D’s life.
